Tradition and Transition: Recent Chinese Art from the Collection features twenty-five works of art, all part of a recent gift, created during the last two decades. The artists featured all made artworks during a time of extraordinary cultural transformation in China; their work represents a range of styles, from the more traditional to works influenced by Western techniques or theories. They created a new visual language that embodies aspects of traditional Chinese art while responding to a time of great transition in the wake of Chairman Mao Zedong’s death in 1976 and the ensuing collapse of the Cultural Revolution.
