WCMA Summer Break Series ‘Ologies’ Continues With ‘Eschatology’

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA) will continue its popular summer series, “Ologies,” on Thursday, Aug. 8.

“Ologies” is a playful riff on the academic experience in which artists take on unexpected fields of study in a series of hour-long interventions. This summer, because WCMA’s main galleries in Lawrence Hall are closed for renovations, programs will be held in locations across the Williams College campus and will be followed by receptions at WCMA Summer Space, located at 76 Spring St. Both the programs and receptions are free and open to the public.

The Aug. 8 program will focus on “Eschatology.” Interdisciplinary artist Kameelah Janan Rasheed takes on the study of the end of the world in a project that explores premonitions, predictions and the limits of human understanding.

Rasheed, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., is an artist and learner seeking to make her thinking visible through an ecosystem of iterative projects, poetic gestures/words in the proximity of poems, long-form essays, publications, large-scale public works, digital archives, teaching, curriculum development, lecture performances, stand-up comedy, and other forms yet to be determined. She is on the faculty of the MFA Fine Arts program at the School of Visual Arts and also works full-time as a social studies curriculum developer for New York public schools. She holds a BA in Public Policy and Africana Studies from Pomona College (2006) and an M.A in Secondary Social Studies Education from Stanford University (2008). She is also the 2019 Katowitz Radin Artist in Residence at Brooklyn Public Library.

The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Sawyer Library on the Williams College campus. Visitors can find limited parking nearby on Chapin Hall Drive and cross Library Quad or park in the back of the library in the lot that can be accessed via Hopkins Hall Drive off Main Street or Mission Hall Drive off Southworth Street. Enter the library via the main doors on Library Quad. Visitors also can park on Spring Street or in the municipal parking lot at the foot of Spring Street and join a group that will walk from Summer Space to Sawyer at 5:10 p.m. Maps of building and parking locations can be found online at wcma.williams.edu.

After the program, visitors are invited to sip, snack and socialize at a reception at 6:30 p.m. at WCMA Summer Space.

“Ologies” will run weekly through Aug. 15. For up-to-date information and maps, visit wcma.williams.edu.

The main WCMA galleries in Lawrence Hall will reopen Friday, Sept. 6, with an exciting lineup featuring Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A., a critically acclaimed exhibition co-curated by Williams College professor C. Ondine Chavoya.
