Reading of ‘A place that exists only in moonlight’

A live reading of Katie Paterson’s artist’s book "A place that exists only in moonlight" will be presented in conjunction with "Candle (from Earth into a Black Hole)."

Katie Paterson’s Candle (from Earth into a Black Hole) unfolds over time during multiple activations over the course of its installation. At each, the candle will burn for two hours, releasing different layers of scent alongside interventions inspired by the installation.

A place that exists only in moonlight contains over one hundred short texts described by the artist as “a series of artworks to exist in the imagination…[that] take shape in the mind of whoever reads the words, and so become an expression of the idea itself.” The poetic phrases evoke landscape, the universe, or an expanded sense of earthly and geological time.

The candle will burn from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Interventions begin in the Reading Room at 6 p.m.

Additional activations on Oct. 10 and 24; and Nov. 7 and 21.
