What to expect:
Participants will be invited to spend time in The Field is The World: Williams, Hawaiʻi, and Material Histories in the Making independently, with orientation from co-curators Sonnet Kekilia Coggins and Kailani Polzak.
Participants will then divide into smaller groups for facilitated conversations to share responses to the exhibition, and talk about how those reactions relate to one of a set of broader questions:
- How do we look at our past to learn from it without either aggrandizing it or condemning it?
- What might Williams students 150 years from now say about the systems and structures we currently use to organize information and make sense of the world?
- What are the range of ways we might reinterpret historical markers in our landscape? What are the stakes for each of those?
Facilitators will take notes during the conversation. These notes will then be consolidated and made available to participants. They will help shape WCMA’s work, and will also be sent to the organizers of a broader campus program around these issues that is currently in development.
