Modern & Contemporary Chinese Art
We invite you to explore modern and contemporary Chinese artworks from our collection.
These 27 artworks, dating from the later 20th century to 2004, were gifted to the museum in 2007 by Red Rock Studio, Hong Kong. The selection represents a range of styles. The 12 featured artists created these works during a time of extraordinary cultural transformation in China. They created a new visual language that embodies aspects of traditional Chinese art while responding to a time of great transition. The artworks merge tradition and transition in various ways that express personal beliefs, national pride, and international awareness.
Special thanks to Gao Shiming, Executive Dean of the School of Intermedia Art, China Academy of Art, who researched the artists and artworks and whose texts are available as PDFs on each page. His texts were translated by Jared Hallett, Williams ’14, and Donald Maruyama, Williams ’12, with Li Yu, Associate Professor of Chinese. Thanks also to Rong Zhao, Williams MA ’10, and Patrick Rhine, Williams ’10.
