Fathi Hassan: Migration of Signs

Fathi Hassan (Nubian, b. 1957) transforms Arabic script into illegible text to illustrate the uncertainty embedded in the experience of migration and displacement. His most recent works explore the idea of Nubia, Egypt, and the Middle East as mythical and nostalgic space. They serve as allegories of the diasporic condition, spiritual journeys, and key reform movements like the Arab Spring.
