Labeltalk 2013: India

February 2, 2013 - June 9, 2013

Labeltalk is an exhibition series that aims to explore works of art from a broad range of perspectives. Labeltalk 2013: India is the ninth exhibition in the series, which began in 1995 with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

We decided to focus this Labeltalk on Indian art, a strength of our collection, and invited 27 Williams professors to participate. To highlight their different perspectives—both professional and personal—we assigned three professors to each work of art selected for the exhibition. Each participant looked closely at his or her work of art and then wrote a short response without any specific prompt.

We are grateful to the professors for the distinct voice and context they gave to the works in the exhibition. Collectively they represent a wide array of disciplines across the Williams campus: anthropology, Arabic, art, astronomy, athletics, biology, chemistry, classics, comparative literature, computer science, dance, economics, English, environmental studies, geosciences, history, mathematics, music, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, romance languages, and theatre.

This exhibition was curated by Elizabeth Gallerani, Coordinator of Mellon Academic Programs.
