Gift of Toni and Stuart B. Young, Class of 1957, M.2014.10

Stuart Davis often explored fractured, irregular geometry and contrasts of shape and color to create an improvisational, syncopated rhythm in his work. Davis’ painting style is the result of years of experimenting with forms of Cubism, collage and simplified renderings of the graphic packaging of commercial products. Known as a major figure of Modern American Art, Davis’ work represents an exploration of American themes of urban life, industrialization, jazz, advertising and consumerism.

Study for Allée was generously donated to the museum from Toni and Stuart B. Young, Class of 1957. Stuart B. Young, a lifelong collector of American paintings, sculpture, photography and more, passed away on August 15, 2014. Stuart loved Williams and was deeply committed to the college museum. He supported WCMA over the years as a Visiting Committee member and as a Museum Fellow. This gift and the the other works of art Stuart gave WCMA over the years will ensure that his legacy of generosity lives on in the museum collection.
