WCMA Announces the Recipients of the Fulkerson Award for Leadership in the Arts

The Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA) is pleased to announce the 2012 recipients of the Fulkerson Award for Leadership in the Arts: William Su, Williams College, Class of 2012; and Caitlin Condell, Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, Class of 2012.

This award, administered by WCMA, recognizes an outstanding graduating Williams senior and a second year graduate student in the history of art for their potential in arts leadership and their contributions to the museum and campus community. William Su and Caitlin Condell will each have the unique opportunity to meet with a prominent Williams alumni leader in the arts. They will also receive an American Association of Museums (AAM) membership for three years. Both awardees have demonstrated a passion for engaging others in thoughtful encounters with works of art.

Caitlin Condell, Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, Class of 2012Caitlin Condell will receive her M.A. in the History of Art this June when she presents a qualifying paper on Man Ray’s rayographs and their relationship to Cubist papier collé.  Condell received her B.A. from Oberlin College in 2007, and came to Williams after working for several years in the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at the Museum of Modern Art.  For the past two years she has served as a curatorial intern at MASS MoCA under the mentorship of Visual Arts Curator Susan Cross ‘94, where she co-curated the exhibition Making Room: The Space Between Two and Three Dimensions.  The show will be on view until January 9, 2013.  She has also been an active member of the Graduate Student Proseminar Committee, which organized a series of conversations with speakers who straddle the line between writer, curator, editor and publisher. In her essay on leadership in the arts Caitlin stated, “As a young woman making her career in this field, I believe that my role must be to promote both emotional and intellectual experiences of the arts, to spark curiosity, encourage open-mindedness, and create opportunities for thoughtful encounters.  A leader must be both an ambassador for challenging work and its custodian.  Persistence, boldness, and willingness to take risks are essential qualities to meaningful and successful leadership, as is a deep commitment to an ethical engagement with the world.”

William Su, Williams College, Class of 2012William Su will receive his B.A. in Art History this June. He has been on the Dean’s List every semester at Williams. He is a 1960s scholar in the Art Department and a teaching assistant for the introductory art history course, Aspects of Western Art. He serves as the student chair of the Honor and Discipline committee, on which he has represented his class since his freshmen year. He has been a Museum Associate at the Williams College Museum of Art since his freshmen year and sat on the museum’s first student advisory board. He has previously interned in the curatorial department at The Clark Art Institute and at the Venice Art Biennale, working on the national pavilions of Iraq and Bangladesh. After Williams he will be participating in the Teach for America program, teaching Middle School English in Charlotte, North Carolina. In his essay, Will described what leadership means to him: “Perhaps what best characterizes what I value in leadership is a dictum my elementary school teacher used to repeat daily: ‘be honest, do your best, and help the other fellow.’ I aspire to lead a life of integrity that engenders respect, a life of assiduous drive, and of giving back, which, to me, is the ultimate measure of success.”

The Fulkerson Fund for Leadership in the Arts was established by Allan Fulkerson, Williams College, Class of 1954. The fund provides intimate opportunities for students to interact with key art world figures; encourages mentoring of Williams students by professionals and Williams alumni in the arts field; creates opportunities that enable students to connect with local arts leadership, institutions, and resources; and empowers students by making available space and resources for student-initiated experiential projects. The fund also provides for the Fulkerson Award to be given out annually.
