Don’t miss the recent press coverage of the exhibition Asco: Elite of the Obscure. Amy Griffin wrote a review for the April 15, 2012 issue of the Times Union and Art New England included a review of the show in their May/June 2012 issue. Check out Art New England Online to read an interview by contributing writer Bonnie Barrett Stretch with C. Ondine Chavoya, co-curator and Williams Associate Professor of Art and Latino/a Studies.

The exhibition catalogue, Asco: Elite of the Obscure A Retrospective, 1972–1987 won Honorable Mention in the New England Museum Association Publication Award Competition in the unit cost over $10 category. This is the second award for this catalogue. It also won the 2012 New York Book Show Award for design of a Scholarly/Professional Book.

This spring at Williams, nearly twenty courses in a variety of disciplines used the Asco exhibition for teaching. In recent months, WCMA has acquired photographs by Seymour Rosen and Harry Gamboa, Jr., a photo collage by Patssi Valdez, and a print by frequent Asco collaborator Teddy Sandoval. Now that these works are in the permanent collection, they will be taught with for many years to come.

Asco: Elite of the Obscure will be on view through July 29, so if you’re in Williamstown this summer stop by! To learn more about Asco attend the WCMA Gallery Talks in July. See the WCMA Events Page for the complete schedule. Asco will travel to the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City in the spring of 2013.

Great book with great photographs. It’s great that such an amazing book is getting the recognition it deserves.
